Preventing Poor Home Air Quality
If you are sick, gather with visitors outdoors when possible, or consider wearing a mask indoors if you must be around others to help prevent the spreading of illness. Masks can block up to 70% of droplets coming from mouths and noses. The best thing you can do, however, is not invite other people into your home who are outside of your household when you are sick, and not have people over who are sick or experiencing symptoms.
Other steps to take to avoid introducing pollutants into your home:
- Take your shoes off inside
- Dust and mop frequently
- Avoid burning scented candles indoors or use candles made of 100% natural materials like beeswax
- Avoid using scented products like air fresheners to cover up smells
- Avoid smoking indoors, especially when children are present
- Turn on an exhaust fan or open a window when you cook
Improving ventilation
Ventilation is bringing in fresh air from outside to improve air circulation and dilute the number of harmful particles in your home. Opening windows is a great idea if the weather allows. You can also place fans in a window to blow potentially contaminated air out and pull new air in. Unfortunately, this is not a good option for communities living next to major roads or industrial activities, because the outside air may already be polluted. You should also avoid opening windows during wildfire smoke events… READ MORE
How Can You Keep Indoor Air Clean?
Inspect your HVAC system. Inspect your system twice a year to make sure it’s working and that the vents are open so fresh air comes in and pollutants can go out. The best times to do this are in the spring and fall, before the peak heating and cooling seasons.
Install central air. Central air systems deliver filtered, recirculated air throughout the home. Zhao recommends choosing a central air system that can mix filtered outdoor air with recirculated air. It should also be able to control the proportion of filtered outdoor air in circulation.
Why is indoor air quality important?
The air quality in public and private buildings is an important factor in your health. Ensuring good air quality in the indoor spaces where you live, work, and play can improve your health as well as your quality of life. Many people spend the bulk of their day indoors, so it is important to have healthy indoor air quality and to improve indoor air quality. This is especially true in places where weather conditions prevent people from being outside.
How does indoor air quality affect our health?
Poor indoor air quality can be related to health problems. These can range from mild respiratory issues to more extreme symptoms. Other symptoms that poor air quality can lead to include:
- eye, nose, and sinus irritation
- headaches
- fatigue
- dizziness
Poor indoor air quality influences the risk of respiratory illnesses, allergy and asthma symptoms, and viruses that can be spread through the air. It can also further irritate existing health conditions and worsen symptoms… READ MORE
