Rule of Thumb: How Much To Budget for Home Maintenance
Key Takeaways
- The 1% rule of thumb is a guideline that states you should save 1% of your home’s purchase price for ongoing repair costs.
- The square-footage rule is another option for estimating how much you should save for home repairs.
- The age and condition of your home are factors you should consider when determining your maintenance budget.
- It’s hard to predict exactly how much money you’ll need, because home components may fall short of their expected lifespan, or they may last much longer.
- Home maintenance costs are not the same as emergency repair costs.

The summer months have arrived. To make the most of your summer and ease the burden of home maintenance and repair, here are 10 tips for keeping your home in tip-top shape.
- Furnace and Air Conditioner Maintenance – With the change of the season, you should change your air filter and consider getting a tune-up for summer. There is nothing worse than going into the summer months and having the A/C go out. Have it checked out now to save you hassle later.
- Smoke Detector – Make sure you test your smoke and carbon monoxide detector and change the battery. If your detector is older than 10 years, it’s time to replace it.
