Aging in Place

Nearly 80% of Americans age 50 and older say they want to remain in their current home and community for as long as possible, according to a recent AARP study. Of course, staying in your home as you get older—“aging in place” is the term of the moment—can involve some obstacles. You may have to consider renovating your home, for example, in order to improve accessibility if your mobility, or the mobility of a loved one, becomes restricted.

Questions you need to ask yourself

  • Do physical or mental limitations affect your ability to live at home? Are you able to get your health needs met at home?
  • Do you have family, friends, or organizations like church groups who will provide non-paid care for you? And are these informal caregivers able to provide the care you may require?
  • Do you have the money you will need to stay at home for in-home services? (Medicare provides limited short term home health care that is specific)
  • How well do you get around at home? Do stairs and the lack of a bathroom on the main floor affect your ability to remain home?
  • Can you afford the home modifications necessary to be able to move about your home as aging affects your physical abilities?
  • What kinds of community services are offered in your area and if they are not free can you afford the cost? (Many communities do not offer services.)
  • Are transportation services available?
  • Is there a senior center nearby?

8 Issues You Must Address if You Plan to Retire in Place

If you hope to remain in your current home, it helps to anticipate future needs.

It’s fun to imagine the possibilities for exciting and exotic, yet affordable places you can live after you retire. But most people don’t actually follow through with a move to a new place. According to an AARP study on aging in place, nearly 90 percent of people over 65 want to stay in their home for as long as possible, and 80 percent believe that their current residence is where they will always live.

Just as there are good reasons to move after you retire, there are several compelling reasons to stay right where you are. You may love your current home and have a strong emotional connection to it. Perhaps you want to remain close to your network of family, friends and support systems rather than start over with making new friends, learning a new area and finding new doctors and other service providers. If you are planning to start a business, you will need the network you have built up over many years. Sometimes moving is not financially feasible. Or perhaps it boils down to inertia and it’s easiest just to stay put. READ MORE
